The Problem
"Daytime Sleepiness" is a frequent problem in our society. The many causes, range from lifestyle to medical conditions. The most common lifestyle issue is a lack of sleep and an accumulating sleep deficit. This is discussed more fully in the section: "SLEEP."
Medical problems associated with "Daytime Sleepiness" are Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Narcolepsy and Sleep Apnea.
Psychiatric problems associated with "Daytime Sleepiness" are mood disorders, anxiety and panic disorder, stress, excessive worry, PTSD, and menopausal issues. It is also necessary to rule out Restless Legs Syndrome and Myoclonus (Myoclonc "Jerks").
With increasing age, sleep becomes less consistent, with frequent naps during the day, poor sleep at night, and a general tiredness during much of the day. However, with advancing age, psychiatric and medical problems are also more common and these conditions must be evaluated and treated.
Treatment And a New Medication
Fortunately with proper diagnosis and treatment, "Daytime Sleepiness" often resolves. In addition to behavioral treatments there are effective medications, including antidepressants, stimulants, and two relatively new medications, Provigil and Nuvigil.
