Lack of Interest and Motivation commonly occurs with a number of psychiatric and medical disorders:
Personality Disorder
Psychological Conflict causing "paralysis"
Tiredness/Anergia from medical conditions
These problems should be ruled out first, before assessing other causes, such as:
Situational Boredom - e.g. - a talented student or employee placed in a non-stimulating environment
Burn-out from months/years of engaging in the same activity - or lack of activity
Relationship Issues
A skillful psychiatrist can "tease out" the sources of the problem and devise an effective plan of treatment. Depending on the issues involved the treatment might involve psychotherapy with or without medication, relationship counseling, or life coaching.
The first step is always an assessment.
